Under the Lucknow Forum for Clean Air, Dr. Surya Kant emphasized that construction and demolition (C&D) waste management is a critical public health priority rather than just a cleanliness issue. Unsafe handling, dumping, and transport of C&D debris release fine airborne dust particulate matter, posing severe health risks to nearby residents especially children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with comorbidities.
Prolonged dust exposure causes asthma, COPD, eye and skin irritation, respiratory infections, reduced lung function, and cardiovascular diseases. Dr. Surya Kant urged Resident Welfare Associations and citizens to take action as ’Vayu Mitras’ by ensuring waste is segregated and processed through authorized recycling systems. He recommended covering debris during storage and transport, reporting illegal dumping, and raising awareness among workers and contractors to safeguard community health.
