October 13, 2025
CSIR Central Drug Research Institute, Sector 10, Jankipuram Vistar, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh

A Capacity Building Workshop was organized at CSIR Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), Lucknow, with around 80 participants, including scientists, technical staff, and non-technical staff. The workshop focused on creating awareness about air pollution and its health impacts. The keynote was delivered by Dr. Surya Kant, Professor & Head of the Department of Respiratory Medicine, KGMU, and National Core Committee Member of Doctors for Clean Air and Climate Action. Dr. Kant highlighted that while hemoglobin and oxygen are essential for life, inhaling polluted air allows contaminated oxygen to circulate throughout the body, affecting multiple organs and accelerating premature aging. He pointed out that air pollution significantly increases the risk of COPD, lung cancer, pneumonia, cardiovascular, and neurological disorders. Dr. Kant emphasized that children, pregnant women, and newborns are especially vulnerable, with exposure contributing to stunting, obesity, malnutrition, and risks such as intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) and congenital complications. Major sources of pollution include vehicular emissions, industrial smoke, open waste burning, construction dust, household fuel use, and passive smoking. He encouraged participants to adopt eco-friendly practices, including walking or cycling, carpooling, conserving electricity, reducing paper use, avoiding firecrackers, and supporting initiatives like eco-friendly “Green Bouquets”. Dr. Kant urged the scientific community to lead by example to promote clean air, health, and sustainable living.
