The Healthy India Alliance, HRIDAY, and Pace University jointly hosted a multi-stakeholder roundtable on elevating Chronic Respiratory Diseases (CRDs) in India, focusing on innovation, community engagement, and partnerships. Invited as a key speaker, Dr. Arvind Kumar, Founder and Managing Trustee of Lung Care Foundation, presented stark facts on India’s growing lung health crisis. Drawing on his 36 years of clinical experience, Dr. Kumar demonstrated how non-smokers’ lungs are transforming from healthy pink to black due to severe air pollution. He highlighted that toxic PM2.5 particles create permanent carbon deposits, turning air pollution into involuntary smoking. Consequently, lung diseases and cancers are increasingly striking young non-smokers. The roundtable highlighted the need for stronger national prioritization of CRDs, early diagnosis and comprehensive care, climate-responsive primary healthcare, and meaningful engagement of lived experience champions in shaping policy and improving health outcomes.
